The story of Lyon’s first Christians
Follow your tour guide for a two-hour guided tour, to learn about the arrival of Saint Pothinus, the first bishop of Lyon, and the history of the city’s first Christians.
On the esplanade of Fourvière, known as ‘la colline qui prie’ (literally ‘the hill that prays’, in reference to its religious importance), you can take in the panoramic view of Lyon and get acquainted with Saint Pothinus.
In Fourvière Basilica, through its stained glass windows and mosaics, you will discover the fate of the first Christian community in the second century CE.
This is followed by a stroll through the new district of the Antiquaille.
The tour ends with a visit to the crypt and dungeon of Saint Pothinus, in the Espace Culturel du Christianisme à Lyon (a centre for learning about Christian history). The restored mosaics illustrate the letter describing the martyrdom of Christians in Lyon, in the year 177.
